Area Description :

Casentino valley is an area of northeastern tuscany, located in the province of arezzo. Crossed by the arno, the same river that flows through florence, this valley reminds of an amphitheatre, surrounded by soft hills and the imposant crests of falterona and pratomagno mountains. We made two apartments out of the old stone farmhouse of our forefathes, who used to live, like many others here in casentino, mostly on chestnuts harvesting. Right in the middle of a little medieval village, located at 750m. A.S.L. Near poppi, our house features rooms with exposed beams, original terracotta tiles pavements, typical tuscan rural furniture and a big garden with wondeful view over the pratomagno mountain. In poppi (about 8kms.) and in bibbiena (about 10kms.), you will find general stores, shops and sport centers (public swimming pool, golf court, etc.). The close city of arezzo offers further cultural artistic and eno-gastronomical entertainments. Because of its relative isolation and its stainless beauty, casentino valley has been choosen by monks and religious, who founded their monasteries in la verna and camaldoli. Because of its strategic position it fell a prey to the florentines. Over the campaldino plain, near poppi, guelphs and ghibellines fighted a bloody battle in 1289. Traces of a glorius past are its castles, medieval villages and ruins, remembered by dante as well, who sojourned here during its exil: poppi, romena, porciano, talla, castel s. Niccolò, montemignaio and fronzola. Part of this territory is occupied by the national park, which, as the whole casentino, offer nice surroundings for walking tours, mountainbike or horse rides. Likewise, much appreciated are the typic products of casentino valley: mushrooms, chestnuts, smoked ham, honey and ravioli filled with potates.
